The Apptegy platform allows you to post directly to Facebook and Instagram from Live Feed. Before you can start posting, you'll need to connect your social media accounts in your Media settings. This article walks you through the requirements, connection steps, and common troubleshooting solutions.
Both integrations rely on Facebook's permissions system, so many of the steps below involve your Facebook account settings — even when connecting Instagram.
Account Requirements
Before attempting to connect, make sure your accounts meet these requirements:
Facebook Requirements
The account used to log in must be a personal Facebook account — not a business or public figure account.
Your school must have a Facebook Page published (this is where content will post).
The person connecting must be an Admin on the school's Facebook Page.
The Facebook account must have an email address applied. If it's missing, add one under your Facebook account preferences.
Instagram Requirements
The Instagram account must be switched to a Business account (not a Creator or Personal account).
Your school's Facebook Page must be a business page.
The Instagram account and Facebook Page must be linked together.
Important: An Instagram account can be "Professional" without being a "Business Account." Make sure it is not set to "Creator." You can verify this in the Instagram app under Settings > Account > Switch Account Type. If set up correctly, you should see options for "Switch to Personal Account" or "Switch to Creator."
Connecting Your Facebook Account
Once your account meets the requirements above, follow these steps to connect Facebook.
1. Open Social Media Settings
In the Media Settings, navigate to Settings and find the Social Media section. Click Connect to Facebook.
2. Grant Permissions
You will be directed to Facebook. On the first screen, click Edit Access before clicking Continue. Make sure all permissions are enabled.
3. Choose What You Allow
Before clicking Continue again, click Choose What You Allow and review that all permissions are toggled on. Then click Continue to complete the connection.
4. Select Your Page
Back in Apptegy, select the appropriate school page from the dropdown menu within Social Media Settings.
Connecting Your Instagram Account
Instagram connects through Facebook's permissions system, so you'll interact with Facebook during this process.
1. Open Social Media Settings
In Media, navigate to Settings and click Connect to Instagram.
2. Grant All Permissions
You will be directed to a Connection/Permissions page on Facebook. Click Edit Settings and make sure all school Facebook Pages are selected and all toggles are enabled. The connection will not succeed unless every permission is granted.
3. Confirm the Connection
Once connected successfully, you should see a Success notification in the bottom left corner of the screen. Then select the appropriate account name from the dropdown menu in Social Media Settings.
Verifying Your Account Connections
After connecting, verify everything is working correctly:
In the Media Social Media Settings, confirm that the correct Facebook Page and Instagram account names appear in the dropdown menus.
When creating a Live Feed post, the Facebook and Instagram icons should be clickable. If an icon is present but not clickable, the account is not connected.
For Instagram, remember that at least one image must be uploaded for the Instagram option to work — Instagram does not support text-only posts.
Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues
Infinite Loop When Connecting
If you click Continue on the first Facebook screen without clicking Edit Access, you may get stuck in an infinite loop where no new pages appear. To fix this:
Go to facebook.com and make sure you are logged in to your personal profile (not the school's page).
Visit facebook.com/settings?tab=business_tools.
Under Business Integrations, click Remove next to Thrillshare.
Return to Media Settings and click Connect to Facebook.
On the first screen, click Edit Access before clicking Continue.
Click Choose What You Allow and review all permissions before clicking Continue again.
"No Instagram Business Pages Available" Message
This message typically means one of the following:
There is no Instagram account connected to the Facebook Page.
The Instagram account is a Personal or Creator account and needs to be converted to a Business account.
The connection between Instagram and Facebook still needs confirmation. In Instagram, go to Edit Profile > Public Business Information and look for an orange Confirm button. Follow the instructions to confirm, then try connecting again in Media Settings.
"We're Sorry, But Something Went Wrong" Error
The most common cause is that the Instagram account is set to Creator instead of Business. To check and fix:
Open the Instagram app and go to the school's profile.
Tap the three bars in the top right corner > Settings > Account > Switch Account Type.
If you see "Switch to Business," select it. Choose an education or school-related category and display the category on the profile.
"No Permission to Manage Instagram Connection" Error
If you see a message about partial or missing permissions:
Sign in to business.facebook.com and go to Settings.
Select Business Assets, then Instagram Accounts, and log in to the appropriate Instagram account.
Go back to Settings and select People.
Click the user who is trying to connect, then click Assign Assets.
Select Instagram as the asset, choose the correct Instagram account, and toggle on all access options.
Click Save Changes, return to Media Settings, refresh, and try connecting again.
Blank Screen When Linking Instagram Through Facebook Page Settings
If a blank screen appears when trying to connect Instagram under Facebook Page > Settings > Instagram, bypass it by using the mobile apps instead:
Instagram App: Go to the school's profile > Edit Profile > under Public Business Information, connect or create a Facebook Page connection.
Facebook App: Go to Pages > select the school page > tap the gear icon for settings > Instagram > Connect.
Permission Issues After Initial Setup
If you have navigated through the setup flow and encountered issues with granting permissions, you may need to remove the Apptegy connection and start over. Note that this will also impact your Facebook connection if one is in place:
On Facebook, click the dropdown menu in the top right of the page.
Select Settings and Privacy > Settings.
Select Business Integrations.
Remove the Apptegy integration.
Return to Media Settings and reconnect.
Things That Can Break an Existing Connection
If your Facebook or Instagram connection stops working after it was previously set up, check for these common causes:
The Admin who connected the account changed their Facebook password.
The Admin is no longer an admin on the Facebook Page (left the school, had privileges revoked, etc.).
Another Admin removed the Apptegy connection from the Page settings within Facebook.
In any of these cases, you will need to reconnect by following the connection steps above.
What You'll Need for Troubleshooting
If you need to contact support, have the following ready:
Admin or Super Admin access in the Apptegy Platform.
Admin access to the school's Facebook Business Page (with login information).
Admin access to the school's Instagram account (with login information).
