How to use the Pages section

You can easily manage pages and page content by clicking into the Pages listed under CMS.

The Pages screen provides an overview of the status of all the pages on your site—draft, published, or archived—as well as if they've been added to the Site Menu.

Pages appear by default in order of creation but can be sorted alphabetically.

Page Creation Steps

All users with CMS permissions can create new pages. Users are automatically set as the Owner of any page that they create and can set the status of the page and add any needed users.

Tip: Only users with the Page Admin permission can publish and unpublish pages.

To create a new page within CMS, select + New Page to begin. Alternatively a new page can also be created after selecting Site Menu in the left side bar in the platform, from this screen select + Add Page.

Continue with the steps below to walk through creating a page:

Add Page Name

Add your page name, this is the name that will appear in your site navigation menu, browser tab, and page breadcrumbs.

Tip: Breadcrumbs are the path that is shown to the public that allows them to figure out where a page lives, and how they got there.

Add Slug

A slug is the part of the page link that identifies the page in an easy to read format (ex: yourdomain.com/slug). A slug is not only a way to uniquely identify pages but also an essential component for improving user experience and search engine optimization (SEO). For instance, if you create a "Contact Us" page, the slug could be contact-us, making the full URL www.yourdomain.com/contact-us. This clean and descriptive format helps users and search engines understand the page content efficiently.

If the page name has been entered first, this field will populate automatically the first time you click into the field. While auto-generated slugs are convenient, customizing them can make URLs more meaningful and aligned with your page content. For instance, consider creating a slug like new-features instead of the generic page-123.

Only lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes are allowed in a page slug. Slugs are unique for each organization, so a page can't be created with a slug that already exists.

Slug Best Practices

  1. Keep slugs concise and descriptive; for example, use board-meeting for meeting agendas.

  2. Regularly review existing pages for outdated or conflicting slugs to maintain organization.

  3. Use auto-generated slugs as a baseline but modify them to reflect the content clearly.

Common Slug Issues and Solutions

Error: "Slug format is invalid"

Cause: The slug contains invalid characters, uppercase letters, or spaces

Solution: Update the slug to only include lowercase letters and words separated by hyphens (e.g., contact-us instead of "Contact Us!").

Error: "Slug is already taken"

Cause: A slug already exists for another page.

Solution: Archive the old page to release the slug, or create a unique identifier like contact-us-v2. Spaces should be replaced with hyphens, and special characters such as exclamation marks or percentage symbols should be avoided.

For example, "New Student Resources" would become new-student-resources. Ensuring uniqueness is crucial, as duplicate slugs result in errors. If duplication occurs, consider modifying the slug or archiving redundant pages.

Add to Site Menu

If you want the page you are creating to be included in your site menu, check this box. You can always add a page to the menu later if you don't select this box initially.

New pages are always added at the bottom of the Pages and Site Menu.

Accessible vs Restricted

Before completing your page creation, you will be given two options Accessible and Restricted. Changing this toggle will restrict editing of a page but not the public's ability to view it.

Accessible - the page will be visible to anyone who has access to CMS

Restricted - the page will be restricted to those who are added to the user list via the button included or via the Page Permissions section in CMS

Finish Page Creation

Finish the creation of your page by selecting Create or Create & Edit.

Create- selecting the create button will close the box and take you back to the list of pages, adding your new page to the bottom of the pages menu.

Create & Edit- selecting the create & edit button will take you directly into the page builder.

Tip: New pages are automatically unpublished. Unpublished pages can be drafted and saved, but won’t be accessible to the public until published.

Duplicating Pages

Duplicating a CMS page allows you to copy the entire contents or page structure from one page to another. Using this feature a page could be used as a template with duplication allowing for a quick copy of the pages structure for reuse.

There are two locations where page duplication can be completed:

In the Pages Menu:

For every created page a duplication icon exists on the right side of the screen under the "Actions" section.

In the Page Details Screen:

After clicking into the edit pencil icon to edit a page, the details screen will appear with a preview of your page. In the top right corner of this screen the (...) elipses menu also includes an option for duplication.

Next Steps:

Once either option above is clicked, a popup box will appear with both the existing page name and slug fields pre-modified with "copy" added. At this time you can edit both fields to to your liking.

Pages will maintain the same status (Draft, Published) and will be added to the Sites Menu if the original page is already in the menu.

In the Site menu duplicated pages will maintain the nesting/hierarchy level of the original page.

Editing a Page

Pages can be edited from the Pages screen, or from the Site Menu. To edit a page click on the pencil icon in the Actions column. Select the purple button titled Edit my draft or Edit Page in the top right hand corner.

Archiving a Page

To Archive

To the right of the page, underneath the Actions section, select the ... menu. Once clicked, a drop down menu will appear Archive as the bottom option.

To Restore

For pages that have been archived, the area underneath Actions will be replaced buttons that will allow each page to be restored individually. Restored pages will be set to Unpublished by default.

Edit Name/Slug of CMS Page

You are able to rename CMS Pages or edit their slugs at any time. You can do either action by itself or you can edit both at the same time.

There are two locations you can edit a page name or slug.

Pages - hover over the ... option in the Actions column. From the dropdown that opens, select Rename.

Details Screen - hover over the ... option on the top right corner From the dropdown that opens, select Rename.

In the popup that opens you'll be able to edit the information in either of fields.

Tip: Slugs the only allowed characters are lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes. You cannot save a page with a slug that has the same name as an existing page.

Warning: If you change the slug of a page, any external links to that page will no longer function. Browsing to the URL that includes previous slug will give a page not found error.
